Candlewicking consists of fairly coarse embroidery worked with soft bulky yarns on a plain-woven cotton fabric. The fabric is then dipped in either very hot or very cold water, which shrinks it enough to lock the soft yarns in place. The name "candlewick" was used to describe this technique because the soft yarns incorporated resembled the cord used as wicks in early candles. American colonial women probably saw this art in England before coming to the United States.

Great care was taken by colonial needleworkers in transferring the designs to the fabric. Each stitch was indicated by a dot and these dots had to wash out easily. By coloring powdered laundry starch with liquid bluing and using a fine, stiff brush, embroiderers were able to transfer the pattern with a stencil. With its simple techniques, inexpensive materials and endless scope for expression, candlewicking is an old art which has been revived and up-dated for today's crafter.

In this booklet, Shariane Designs has expanded upon the traditional candlewicking concept. You will find our designs offer the needleworker a new dimension in stitching art, utilizing modern fabrics and materials.

Patterns include: Butterfly, Welcome, Rooster, Decorative Edgings, Unicorn, and Nautilus Shell
