Step into the wonderful world of picture sculpture and discover the magic of turning a flat art print into an object with life-like contours.

With this book as your guide, you will learn how to select and cut out figures from art prints. You will learn how to use simple tools to shape the parts of a figure so that a boy's trousers are no longer flat but bulge in the seat and curve at the belt. You will free the leaves of a flower to bend away from the stem. An you will learn to put the figure back together again in a manner true-to-life, so that a child's sunbonnet rests on her curly hair instead of alongside it as in the original, flat print.

These delightful contoured figures need not be hidden in the dark recesses of a shadow box, like layered decoupage, in order that they be viewed from the front only. Similar to bas-relief sculpture, they are almost as attractive viewed from the side as they are from the front. The assembled figures can be surface-mounted on a plaque, or propped in the foreground of a rustic box like "One-Print Willie" on page 4. Floral prints, like our "Picture Pair of Posies" on page 10, can, of course, be lovely framed.

Fashioning these life-like figures from a single art print is only half the fun of picture sculpture. The other half begins when you create your custom background. A figure cut away from its printed background can be placed in the setting you choose for it, just as a playwright is free to place his characters in a meadow or in the forest. Picture sculpture lets you become the artist.
