If " a thing of beauty is a joy forever," then the satisfaction of making a beautiful picture into a masterpiece individually your own is truly a cause for rejoicing! Imagine, for example, the excitement of transforming a mere calendar art print into an eloquent gold leafed decal such as the portrait on our cover. The key that freed the beauty of this print from its plain paper prison is DECAL CRAFT. And all the know-how that it takes to make a decal, along with a host of ideas for creating decorative decal projects, are yours for the reading.

You may wonder, "Why make a picture into a decal?" The reason is simple. Once a picture is transferred to a decal film, it acquires some marvelous properties that paper - alas! - is forever doomed to forgo. For starters, a decal protects the picture by making it completely waterproof. A decal, furthermore, has no paper "backdrop," thus giving it the illusion of hand painting. It also adapts to curves without wrinkling, making it a more conformable covering for an eggshell or a plastic dome. And a decal does away with the thick layer of paper between a picture and the surface on which it is mounted - thus producing a "skin-tight" fitting film which accentuates the irregular texture of surfaces such as canvas board.
